Can you believe it?!
Weren't they just born yesterday? That first year flies by so quickly and now your little baby is nearly a full year old! A first birthday session is a fun way to celebrate this big milestone and capture those details professionally. Your little one (and yourself!) will love to look back on these images as they continue to grow. First birthday sessions take place in my commercial studio, located at 158 Casimir St in Port Perry.
To smash or not to smash ...
A first birthday session is often referred to as a cakesmash session. You have the option to incorporate a cake, or just keep it simple with some portraits on a fun backdrop. These sessions flow in 3 parts: portraits, cakesmash (if desired), and finally the little bath tub. I encourage my clients to bring one of their own outfits for the portraits, and to use one of my studio outfits for the cakesmash portion. The studio closet is stocked with dresses and romper overalls that look great with these sessions.
Sets that don't compete with baby
I love the look of a white backdrop with a fun pop of colour to dress up the occasion. I create custom coloured balloon garlands for all of my first birthday sessions. I don't stock themed backdrops or props in my studio, but I'm not opposed to themes! There are many ways we can incorporate subtle themes while still keeping baby as the centre of attention. If you have props or elements that you'd like to bring with you, this is something that we can discuss in the planning process.
Bonus: take your garland home with you after your session! They will keep for a surprisingly long time and are the perfect size to place over a cake table for a birthday party.
Did someone say cake?
If you would like to incorporate a cake into your session, you have two options: 1. I can take care of the cake and source a 5" naked cake from a local baker. These cakes are a traditional vanilla cake with white buttercream icing. Or, 2. you can take care of ordering and bringing, or baking your own cake. Some parents choose this option because they like the sentiment of baking their own cake, or they already have a preferred baker in mind. This is also a great option for little ones that have food allergies or restrictions and/or parents who aren't quite ready to introduce their baby to traditional baked goods.

When to book
It's best to book this session anywhere between 3-6 weeks prior to your little one's birthday. This ensures that you will have your images back in time for the big day! For this reason, I suggest reaching out when your little one is 9-10 months of age so that we can reserve your session date and start the planning process. Ready to book?
